Calakmul 2023

Heart of Calakmul

I approach to check if what I think I see is true. The only focus that illuminates the scene in the bowels of the pyramid emits the brilliance of a radiant star, like those that appear in medieval paintings. Under the fine mist of lime, a sleepy line seems to wake up after fifteen hundred years of hibernation. Little by little, the line descends, comes out, lengthens, enters again; it falls, undulates, returns, rises again and closes. Gain volume, texture, life, color.

Forests of Calakmul

Calakmul’s tropical forests could be considered one of the most resistant ecosystems in the American continent. The area contains the greatest abundance of wildlife and the greatest diversity of mammals in the Maya region. Its great biological diversity includes more than 80% of the plant species of the entire Yucatan Peninsula, as well as 350 species of birds and almost 100 species of mammals.

It is home to several species of large vertebrates in danger of extinction in Mexico, such as the white-lipped peccary (Tayassu pecari), Central American tapir (Tapirus bairdii), jaguar (Panthera onca), puma (Puma concolor), king vulture (Sarcoramphus papa) and ocellated turkey (Meleagris ocellata).

The Mayan city that we know today as Calakmul (“the two adjacent pyramids”) bore the name of Uxte’tuun (“Three Stelae”). The archaeological remains of the area are made up of vestiges of at least 1,500 years (around 500 BC to 1000 AD) of intense population growth and complex social evolution that successfully adapted to the natural environment.

There was only immobility and silence in the darkness, in the night. Only the Creator, the Trainer, Tepeu, Gucumatz, the Forefathers, were in the water surrounded by clarity. They were hidden under green and blue feathers, that is why they are called Gucumatz.

The Plant Snake
The creeper
when it climbs the trunk of a tree,
aims to capture your soul.
What this vegetable snake ignores;
It is that the soul of a tree,
is not inside its trunk,
but in the singing of birds.
